15 August: International Relaxation Day: Can We Unwind and Reconnect?
Posted by Laura Klein on 15th Aug 2023
As the demands of modern life grow, finding moments of tranquility is vital for our overall well-being.
International Relaxation Day really exists. It's celebrated annually on 15 August and serves as a gentle reminder that taking a break is not just a luxury, but a necessity for a healthier and happier life.
The idea for this day actually came from Michigan-based Sean Moeller who thought of this day in 1985 when he was just 9 years old!
The rule of the day is to avoid doing anything stressful - yeah right, quite a task in the hustle and bustle of daily routines.
But can you challenge yourself to find just 5 minutes of tranquility today?
The Importance of Relaxation and Self-Care
The pace of life can often leave us feeling overwhelmed, stressed, and disconnected. This is where relaxation and self-care come in, acting as powerful tools to combat these challenges.
Taking time to relax allows our bodies to recover from stress, lowering the risk of burnout and chronic health issues. Relaxation is NOT LAZY - it scientifically reduces anxiety, boosts mood, and enhances cognitive function.
Ways Parents Can Relax
1. Mindful Moments: Dedicate a few minutes each day to practice mindfulness. Find a quiet spot (preferably in fresh air, close your eyes, and focus on your breath: 2 quick breathes in, 1 slow breath out. This simple act can help you regain perspective and reduce stress.
2. Nature Escapes: Spend time in nature with your family and pets. Whether it's a walk, a picnic in the park, or a leisurely stroll on the beach, being surrounded by natural beauty can be incredibly rejuvenating. It's also a good way to reset a ratty toddler in the late afternoon.
3. Sunlight: Scientists recommend our eyes/retinas should see natural daylight/sunshine within 10 minutes of waking in the morning. And a part of the skin (arms/legs) should be in contact with direct sunlight for a few minutes. Short exposure to sunlight profoundly affects mood and health. It also resets circadian rhythm/body clock to lead you to a better sleep that night. A good reason to ditch the morning phone scroll in bed?
4. Music and Movement: Physical activity is a great way to release tension and boost endorphins. Try putting on some fun music (even old school 90s hits) and dance around the living room with your kids. Instant vibe uplift.
Helping Children Relax
1. Family Time: Spend quality time with your children. Engage in activities that foster connection and laughter, such as playing board games, having a movie night, or cooking a meal together.
2. Limit Screen Time: Encourage screen-free time for both you and your children. This allows everyone to disconnect from digital distractions and engage in more mindful activities.
3. Bedtime Rituals: Establish calming bedtime routines. Reading a book together or practicing deep breathing can help children wind down and prepare for a restful night's sleep.
4. Outdoor Play: Maggie Dent, parenting researcher once famously said: "When kids are ratty, put them in water or put them in nature". Whether it's a visit to the park, playing tag, swimming or riding bikes, fresh air and physical activity can work wonders for reducing stress and promoting relaxation.
The Ripple Effect of Relaxation
Modeling relaxation and self-care not only benefits you and your children individually, but it also creates a positive ripple effect throughout the family unit.
Children learn by observing their parents' behavior, so when they witness their parents prioritizing relaxation, they are more likely to adopt these practices themselves. Furthermore, a relaxed and rejuvenated parent is better equipped to handle challenges, make informed decisions, and provide emotional support to their children.
Let your family, kids and workmates know today is International Relaxation Day. Ask for their suggestions and ideas, even if it's just 5 minutes of chill and let's make a commitment to taking a step back from the demands of daily life and embracing moments of calm.
