What's in the Partner Bag? The 12 Must-Haves

1. A Change of Clothes (or Two!)

Labour can be unpredictable. You might be at the hospital for a few hours, or you could be there much longer than expected. Pack a fresh T-shirt, comfy shorts or trackies, underwear and socks.

Partner tip: Choose something comfortable. You're partner needs you to be focused on them, not on you and that your shoes are too tight... get it together....  you're about to meet your baby!

2. Comfortable Shoes

You might spend hours standing, walking around the room, fetching water or helping your partner get comfortable. Leave the fancy shoes at home. A comfortable pair of sneakers or slip-ons will do the job.

3. A Pillow and Blanket

Let's be clear: Mum is doing the hard work here. Depending on the hospital, you might be spending the night on a chair, recliner or fold-out bed. A small pillow and cozy blanket from home could make all the difference when it's finally time to grab a little sleep.

Check your hospital's support-person accommodation arrangements before packing.

4. Your Toiletries

A little freshening up can go a long way after a long night.

Pack a small toiletry bag with:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste

  • Deodorant

  • Face wash

  • Hairbrush

  • Lip balm

  • Any medication you regularly take

PARTNER tip: Travel-size toiletries are perfect for keeping your hospital bag light.

5. Snacks, Snacks and More Snacks

Nobody wants a hungry partner in the delivery room. Labour can be long, and hospital cafés don't always operate when you need them. Pack some easy, mess-free snacks like muesli bars, nuts, crackers, dried fruit or your favourite treats.

Just remember to follow the hospital's guidance about what your partner can eat or drink during labour.

6. A Reusable Water Bottle

Between the excitement, nerves and running around, it's easy to forget to drink enough water. Bring a large refillable water bottle so you can stay hydrated without constantly leaving the room.

Bonus points if you pack one for Mum too!

7. A Tablet, Book or Downloaded Entertainment

There can be plenty of waiting around during labour, particularly in the early stages.Maybe download a movie, you could watch together, Remember to download any podcasts, playlists or an audiobooks before you leave home.

Don't forget to ask your partner what music they'd like playing. Maybe a make a special playlist for them. A relaxing playlist for early labour… and something a little more celebratory for after baby's arrival.

8. Headphones or Earbuds

Perfect for those quiet moments when your partner is resting. You'll be able to listen to music or catch up on a podcast without disturbing anyone.

Just make sure you're ready to put them away whenever you're needed.

9. Phone Charger and Power Bank

This one is non-negotiable! Your phone is about to become your camera, family announcement center, contact list and probably your way of ordering a much-needed coffee. Pack a long charging cable and a fully charged portable power bank.

Partner tip: A two metre charging cable can be a lifesaver when the nearest power point is on the other side of the room.

10. A Camera (or Plenty of Phone Storage)

Those first moments are amazingly special. Whether you're using your phone or a camera, make sure everything is charged and you've got enough storage. Before labour, chat with your partner about which moments she'd like photographed and which she'd prefer to keep private.

And remember, some hospitals have rules about photography and filming during birth.

11. Your Family Announcement List

Once baby arrives, there's going to be a lot of excitement. Grandparents, siblings, best friends… everyone will be waiting for the big news! Create a list of the people you'd like to contact first. You can even prepare a message ahead of time together, decide what you want to say as a couple, and fill in baby's details when you're ready.

Partner tip: Agree together on when you're comfortable sharing photos or announcing baby's arrival on social media.

12. A Little Something Special for Mum

This one isn't essential, but it's a lovely touch. After months of pregnancy and the incredible experience of giving birth, a thoughtful gesture can mean a lot. It doesn't have to be expensive. A handwritten letter, a small keepsake, they're favourite chocolate or a meaningful gift can make the moment even more special.

Sometimes the simplest gestures are the ones remembered forever.

Don't Forget These Extras!

A few important things that might not fit neatly into your Partner Bag but should definitely be on your pre-baby checklist.

Important documents: Have your driver's licence or photo ID, Medicare card, private health insurance details (if applicable), and any hospital paperwork ready.

Wallet and payment cards: Handy for parking, meals, vending machines and those emergency coffee runs.

The car seat: Make sure your baby's car restraint is correctly installed and suitable for a newborn before the big day.

Hospital details: Save the maternity ward's phone number, parking information and hospital directions in your phone.

And perhaps most importantly, make sure you know where Mum's hospital bag is too!

One More Thing: Getting Ready to Bring Baby Home

While you're packing for the hospital, it's worth thinking about those first few weeks at home. Full of beautiful firsts, tiny cuddles, late-night feeds and a whole lot of learning.

Newborns can get little blocked noses, particularly when they're unwell, and because babies rely heavily on breathing through their noses, congestion can make feeding and settling more challenging. Some parents like to have a few baby care essentials ready before their little one arrives.
