My Thoughts on International Women's Day

My Thoughts on International Women's Day

Posted by Laura Klein on 7th Mar 2024

As a 50 year old female founder of a small business in Australia, I'm brimming with enthusiasm for International Women's Day 2024.

I'm a wife, sister, daughter, business leader and community member, and I'm surrounded by examples of passionate, kind and high achieving women in both my personal and business life. Hurrah!

I'm also the Mum of a 15 year old girl who is carving her own path with spirit, creativity, kindness and tenacity.

I'm also the Mum of 2 boys, who I'm raising to be respectful, kind, supportive and empathetic to the girls and women around them.

For me, IWD is not just a token day. It's a day for the entire community to celebrate.

It's a beacon that illuminates the path we've trodden and the exciting journey ahead.

Here's my top 5 thoughts on IWD, as it applies to our unique corner of the world.

1. The Legacy of Trailblazers: We are surrounded by incredible women who've carved paths through challenge and adversity. These trailblazers, from suffragettes to scientists, from leaders to legends, have woven a rich tapestry of resilience and determination.

Their stories aren't just history; they're a blueprint for future brilliance.

2. Unity in Diversity: Australia's rich mix of cultures is a testament to the strength found in diversity. Women from every corner of the globe call Australia home, bringing with them their unique perspectives, traditions, and dreams. This mosaic of backgrounds creates a solid bank of ideas, making our community vibrant and resilient.

It's a reminder that when we stand together, we shine brighter.

3. Innovation and Entrepreneurship: There's a bubbling pot of innovation and entrepreneurship that's distinctly female. From tech start-ups to eco-friendly enterprises and small businesses started at the kitchen table, Australian women are at the forefront, driving change and creating a future that's not only sustainable but also inclusive.

Their creativity and courage in business inspire a new generation of girls to dream big and break boundaries.

4. Education and Empowerment: Education is the key that unlocks the door to the future, and in Australia, we're blessed with opportunities that allow women to pursue their passions and professions. The growing emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields, alongside arts and humanities, ensures that girls can aspire to any career.

This empowerment through education fosters a world where their potential is limitless.

5. The Spirit of Advocacy: Australian women have never shied away from raising their voices for justice and equality. From advocating for gender pay parity to combating climate change, their activism paves the way for meaningful change.

A shout out to woman I admire all around the globe: Jane Fonda, Turia Pitt, Sara Blakely, Oprah, Iris Apfel, Rosie Batty, Ita Buttrose, Carmen Cresswell, Emma Isaacs, Queen Mary of Denmark, Tina Fey, Eleanor Roosevelt, Regan Hillyer, Taylor Swift, Kylie Minogue, Melanie Perkins, Zoe Foster-Blake, Grace Tame, Chanel Contos, Melinda Gates, Terri Irwin, Dolly Parton, and Madeleine Madden.

Looking to the future, I see a horizon loaded with opportunities for girls and women. My hope is for a society where every girl grows up knowing her worth is immeasurable, her potential is unlimited, and her voice is powerful.

I envision a future where women lead and succeed in every field without the shadow of discrimination.

As a former primary teacher, I know that education is the great equalizer, offering every girl the tools to achieve her dreams, take risks, explore opportunities and give it everything she's got.

Let International Women's Day ignite our collective imagination, fuel our dreams, and work towards a future where gender equality isn't just an aspiration but a reality.
